What is Three Minute Therapy?
Three Minute Therapy is a self-help method developed by psychologist Michael Edelstein and based on Albert Ellis's REBT. It uses a six-step A to F exercise to identify, question and replace the irrational beliefs behind upsetting feelings.
Who created Three Minute Therapy?
Dr Michael R. Edelstein, a San Francisco clinical psychologist trained by Albert Ellis, created it. He wrote the book Three Minute Therapy with David Ramsay Steele, and Ellis wrote the foreword.
Does it really take only three minutes?
Once you are familiar with the exercise, you can work through it in a few minutes. Ellis noted that the exercises can be practised in three-minute segments repeated several times a day.
Is Three Minute Therapy the same as CBT?
It is a form of REBT, which was one of the first cognitive behavioural therapies. It shares CBT's focus on changing thoughts, with a special emphasis on rigid "musts".
