Human Design is a self-knowledge system that uses your date, time and place of birth to create a personal chart called a BodyGraph. Founded in 1987 by Ra Uru Hu, it combines elements of astrology, the I Ching, the Kabbalah and the chakra system to describe your energy Type, a Strategy for engaging with life and an Inner Authority for making decisions.

Quick answer: what is Human Design?
- It is a chart based on your birth data. Your BodyGraph is calculated from your birth date, time and location, and shows nine energy Centres, Channels and Gates (Jovian Archive).
- There are four Types. Manifestors, Generators (including Manifesting Generators), Projectors and Reflectors each have their own Strategy, Signature and Not-Self theme (Jovian Archive).
- Strategy and Authority are the core. Your Strategy tells you how to engage with life, and your Inner Authority shows how to make decisions that are correct for you (Jovian Archive).
- It is presented as an experiment. Rather than asking for belief, Human Design invites you to test your Strategy and Authority in daily life and observe the results (Jovian Archive).
- You can get your chart free. Free charts are available from myBodyGraph, the official Jovian Archive app, and many other websites.

What Is Human Design?
Human Design is a system for understanding how you are built to use your energy and make decisions. Its central tool is the BodyGraph, a chart calculated from the moment and place of your birth. Jovian Archive, the organisation that holds Ra Uru Hu’s original teachings, describes it as a synthesis of the I Ching, the Kabbalah Tree of Life, the Hindu-Brahmin chakra system and astrology, along with ideas drawn from quantum physics and genetics (Jovian Archive).
What makes Human Design distinctive is that it is practical. Instead of describing your personality and leaving it there, it gives you a Strategy for engaging with life and an Inner Authority for making decisions. You are invited to try them in your own life and see what changes. In the words of Jovian Archive, “Human Design isn’t something to believe in, it’s something to test in your own experience” (Jovian Archive).

Where Human Design Came From
Human Design began in 1987, when Ra Uru Hu, born Alan Robert Krakower, had what he described as a mystical experience on Ibiza. Over eight days he received the information that became the Human Design System (Jovian Archive). He spent the following 25 years developing and teaching it around the world until he passed away in 2011.
Ra’s lectures and courses are preserved by Jovian Archive, which publishes his teachings, runs beginner courses and provides the free myBodyGraph chart app. Professional training is offered by the International Human Design School and by many independent teachers.
Since the 2010s, Human Design has become much more widely known through books, podcasts, social media and readers who share their Types and charts online. Popular modern teachers include Karen Curry Parker, Chetan Parkyn and Richard Beaumont, each with their own accessible way of explaining the system.
How Human Design Works
The BodyGraph
Your chart is calculated from two sets of data. The Personality (shown in black) represents your conscious self, and the Design (shown in red) represents your unconscious self and your body’s intelligence (Jovian Archive). In Human Design teaching, the Design data is taken from a moment about three months before birth.
The nine Centres
The BodyGraph has nine energy Centres, adapted from the chakra system: Head, Ajna, Throat, G (identity), Heart or Ego, Sacral, Solar Plexus, Spleen and Root. A coloured Centre is “defined” and works in a consistent way. A white Centre is “open” and takes in energy from others, which Human Design sees as a place of both conditioning and potential wisdom (Jovian Archive).
Channels and Gates
Centres are linked by Channels, which come from the Kabbalah, and each Channel is made of two Gates, which correspond to the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching (Jovian Archive). The particular Gates and Channels in your chart describe your specific gifts and themes.
The four Types
| Type | Share of people | Strategy | Signature | Not-Self theme |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manifestor | About 9% | Inform before acting | Peace | Anger |
| Generator and Manifesting Generator | About 70% | Wait to respond | Satisfaction | Frustration |
| Projector | About 20% | Wait for the invitation | Success | Bitterness |
| Reflector | About 1% | Wait a lunar cycle (about 29.5 days) for big decisions | Surprise | Disappointment |
Figures and descriptions are from Jovian Archive.
Inner Authority
Your Inner Authority is the part of you that Human Design says can be trusted to make decisions. The most common is Emotional (Solar Plexus) Authority, which asks you to wait out your emotional wave before deciding. Others include Sacral Authority (a gut response in the moment), Splenic Authority (an instant intuitive hit), Ego, Self-Projected (G Centre), Environmental or Sounding Board Authority, and Lunar Authority for Reflectors (Jovian Archive).
Profile and Definition
Your Profile is a pair of numbers, such as 1/3 or 4/6, taken from the lines of your Sun hexagrams, and describes the role or “costume” you play in life. Your Definition describes how your defined Centres connect: Single, Split, Triple Split, Quadruple Split or, for Reflectors, none (Jovian Archive).
How to Start Your Human Design Experiment
Jovian Archive suggests starting with your Type, Strategy and Inner Authority before going any deeper (Jovian Archive). These steps give you a simple four-week experiment.
- Find your birth details. Look up your date, place and, ideally, exact time of birth. A birth certificate, hospital record or family member can help. Some details of the chart can change with small time differences.
- Get your chart. Enter your details into a free chart calculator such as myBodyGraph. You will see your BodyGraph, with coloured (defined) and white (open) Centres.
- Note your Type, Strategy and Authority. Write down these three things from your chart. They are the foundation of the whole system.
- Read about your Type. Spend some time reading or watching an introduction to your Type, including its Signature (how it feels when you are on track) and Not-Self theme (how it feels when you are off track).
- Choose small decisions to practise on. For the next few weeks, use your Strategy and Authority with everyday choices first, such as which invitation to accept or which task to start.
- Notice your signposts. Each evening, note moments of your Signature, such as satisfaction, peace, success or surprise, and moments of your Not-Self theme, such as frustration, anger, bitterness or disappointment.
- Keep a journal. Record what you decided, how you decided and what happened. Patterns often become clearer over a few weeks.
- Review and go deeper. After four weeks, look back over your notes. If the experiment feels useful, explore your Profile, open Centres and Definition next.
Treat this as a gentle, curious experiment rather than a set of rules. Many people find that simply paying attention to how they make decisions brings fresh self-awareness.
What People Use Human Design For
- Making decisions. Strategy and Authority offer a structured alternative to overthinking. See overthinking.
- Managing energy. Many Projectors and Reflectors say understanding their Type helps them rest without guilt and avoid pushing themselves too hard. See burnout and energy and fatigue.
- Self-acceptance. Seeing your design as something to honour, rather than fix, can lift self-worth. See self-esteem and self-love practices.
- Relationships. Comparing charts can help partners and families understand each other’s rhythms. See improving communication and conflict resolution.
- Career and purpose. People use their Type, Profile and Incarnation Cross to reflect on work that suits them. See motivation.
- Boundaries. Understanding open Centres helps people notice when they are taking on other people’s emotions or pressure. See setting boundaries.
What the Research Shows
Human Design itself has not yet been studied in formal research. Jovian Archive presents it as a personal experiment: “change nothing except how you make decisions, and then watch what happens” (Jovian Archive). Research on related skills, however, sheds light on why paying attention to yourself in this way can be valuable.
Self-reflection and insight
Psychologists see self-reflection and insight as key parts of how people create behaviour change, both in therapy and in coaching. The Self-Reflection and Insight Scale was developed to measure these two qualities (Grant et al., 2002).
A clear sense of self
People with higher self-concept clarity, meaning their beliefs about themselves are clear, consistent and stable, tend to have higher self-esteem and lower neuroticism (Campbell et al., 1996). Many people say a framework like Human Design gives them clearer language for who they are.
Listening to the body
Human Design’s Authorities rely on bodily signals, such as a gut response or an emotional wave. Research has found that people who can accurately sense their heartbeat show a stronger link between their bodily reactions and their feelings, and that bodily signals can guide intuitive decision-making (Dunn et al., 2010).
Waiting before complex decisions
Emotional Authority asks you to wait for clarity rather than decide in the moment. In four studies, people made more satisfying complex choices, such as choosing between cars, when they did not deliberate attentively for a period before deciding (Dijksterhuis et al., 2006).
Naming what you feel
Journalling your Signature and Not-Self themes involves putting feelings into words. Brain imaging research found that labelling emotions reduced activity in the amygdala, a brain region involved in emotional reactions (Lieberman et al., 2007).
The studies at a glance
| Study | Focus | Main finding |
|---|---|---|
| Grant et al., 2002 | Self-reflection and insight | Key factors in behaviour change and coaching |
| Campbell et al., 1996 | Self-concept clarity | Linked to higher self-esteem |
| Dunn et al., 2010 | Bodily signals | Interoception shapes intuitive decisions |
| Dijksterhuis et al., 2006 | Complex choices | Better choices without attentive deliberation |
| Lieberman et al., 2007 | Naming feelings | Labelling emotions calms the amygdala |
Understanding Your Type
Manifestors
Manifestors are described as initiators with a closed, repelling aura. They do not need to wait for something outside them before acting, but informing the people affected before they act helps reduce resistance. When they are on track they feel peace (Jovian Archive).
Generators and Manifesting Generators
Generators are described as the life force of the planet, with an open, enveloping aura and a defined Sacral Centre. Their Strategy is to wait for something to respond to, and their reward is satisfaction. Manifesting Generators are a subtype of Generator who can move quickly and may skip steps, but share the same Strategy (Jovian Archive).
Projectors
Projectors are described as guides who see deeply into other people and systems. Their Strategy is to wait for recognition and invitation, especially for big things such as careers and relationships. When their gifts are recognised they experience success (Jovian Archive).
Reflectors
Reflectors are the rarest Type, with no defined Centres. They reflect the energy of the people and places around them, and they are encouraged to take a full lunar cycle before major decisions. Their Signature is surprise (Jovian Archive).
The Not-Self and deconditioning
Human Design teaches that most of us make decisions with the mind and through conditioning from others, which it calls the Not-Self. Following your Strategy and Authority is said to gradually release that conditioning, a process Ra described as taking around seven years (Jovian Archive). This does not mean you need to wait years to benefit: many people notice small changes in how they feel within weeks.
Getting the Most from Human Design
- Start simple. Jovian Archive recommends living your Type, Strategy and Authority before studying Gates, Channels and Profiles in depth (Jovian Archive).
- Use an accurate birth time. Some parts of the chart can change with small time differences (Jovian Archive).
- Stay curious. Treat the chart as a set of ideas to test, not a fixed label.
- Combine it with reflection. A short daily journal helps you see patterns in your decisions and energy.
- Be kind to yourself. Mistakes are part of the experiment and show you the difference between your mind and your Authority.
- Explore relationships gently. Use charts to understand others, not to judge or box them in.
- Pair it with other practices. Many people combine Human Design with meditation, mindfulness or shadow work.
Getting a reading
A reading with an experienced analyst can help you understand your chart in depth. Look for someone trained through a recognised school, such as the International Human Design School, or with a long teaching history. Prices vary widely by country and experience, so compare a few options, and remember that your free chart and Type, Strategy and Authority are enough to begin.
Human Design vs Astrology vs Personality Tests
| Human Design | Astrology | Personality tests | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Based on | Birth date, time and place | Birth date, time and place | Your answers to questions |
| Main output | Type, Strategy, Authority and BodyGraph | Birth chart and planetary positions | A personality profile |
| Focus | How to make decisions and use energy | Character, cycles and themes | Traits and preferences |
| Practice | A daily experiment with decisions | Reflection and timing | Self-understanding |
Jovian Archive describes the difference simply: astrology is interpretive and symbolic, personality tests are descriptive and self-reported, and Human Design is “operational”, because it tells you how to move, wait, respond and decide (Jovian Archive).
