Who is Mel Robbins?

Mel Robbins grew up in Michigan, trained as a lawyer and later worked as a coach, radio host and TV commentator. Her life looked successful from the outside, but she says that at 41 she was unemployed, drowning in debt and so overwhelmed she could barely get out of bed. [1]

Everything changed with one simple tool: the 5 Second Rule. It got her moving, one small step at a time. [1] She first shared the idea in her 2011 TEDx talk in San Francisco, How to stop screwing yourself over, which has been viewed more than 34 million times on YouTube. [2]

Her books, including The 5 Second Rule, The High 5 Habit and The Let Them Theory, have reached millions of readers in over 66 languages. The Let Them Theory sold more than 10 million copies in its first 12 months and was the #1 selling book of 2025. [1]

She is the creator and host of The Mel Robbins Podcast, nominated for the first-ever Golden Globe Award for Best Podcast, with millions of weekly listeners in 193 countries. TIME named her one of the TIME100 Creators of 2025 and a TIME Woman of the Year in 2026. [1]

Her approach in brief

  1. Count down and move. When you hesitate, count 5-4-3-2-1 and act before your brain talks you out of it.
  2. Back yourself daily. High-five yourself in the mirror to make believing in yourself a habit.
  3. Let Them. Stop trying to control other people’s opinions, drama and choices.
  4. Let Me. Put that energy back into what you can control: your own next step.

Good fit if

You know what you should do but struggle to make yourself do it, you overthink or doubt yourself, or you spend too much energy worrying about what other people think.

Our take

Warm, funny and refreshingly practical. Her tools are simple enough to use the same day.

The tools of Mel Robbins

Robbins is known for turning research into simple tools you can use right away, bridging the gap between knowing what to do and doing it. [1] Tap a card to read more.

The 5 Second Rule

“The secret to changing your life isn’t knowing what to do – it’s knowing how to make yourself do it.” [3]

The 5 Second Rule uses a simple countdown. The moment you feel an instinct to act on a goal, count backwards, 5-4-3-2-1, and physically move before hesitation and excuses kick in. Robbins teaches that you can use the Rule and its countdown method to break bad habits, interrupt self-doubt and negative self-talk, and push yourself to take the actions that will change your life. [3]

Try it tomorrow morning: when the alarm goes off, count 5-4-3-2-1 and get up. Our guides to procrastination and motivation have more ways to get moving.

The High 5 Habit

The High 5 Habit is a simple tool for changing your attitude, mindset and behaviour. Here is how she describes it: [4]

  1. Brush your teeth in the morning, then put the toothbrush down. Pairing the habit with something you already do helps it stick.
  2. Look the person in the mirror in the eye.
  3. Set an intention for who you will be today.
  4. Raise your hand and high-five your reflection.

She suggests trying it for five days in a row. In the book, Robbins uses research, personal stories and real-life results to show how to make believing in yourself a habit, so you can act with the confidence your goals demand. [5]

The book shows how to flip self-doubt, jealousy, fear and unworthiness into motivators, build confidence in simple ways every day and calm anxiety so you feel comfortable being yourself. [5] Our self-confidence and self-esteem guides go further.

The Let Them Theory

The Let Them Theory is a step-by-step guide to stop letting other people’s opinions, drama and judgement affect your life. Two simple words, Let Them, free you from the exhausting cycle of trying to manage everything and everyone around you. [6]

The second half of the idea is “Let Me”: once you let other people be who they are, you turn your attention to what you will do next. The book covers managing stress, fearing other people’s opinions less, dealing with negative reactions, overcoming comparison, adult friendships and choosing the love you deserve. [6]

What the Research Shows

Robbins describes her tools as research-backed, and related studies support their main ideas.

  • Turning intention into action. A meta-analysis of 94 studies found that planning exactly when and how you will act, an “if-then” plan, had a medium-to-large effect on reaching goals. [11] The 5 Second Rule is a similar cue that links a moment of hesitation to immediate action.
  • Affirming yourself. A review of self-affirmation research found that briefly reflecting on your own values and worth can reduce defensiveness and improve outcomes in areas such as education and health. [12] That fits the spirit of the High 5 Habit.
  • Talking to yourself well. A meta-analysis of 32 studies found that deliberate, positive self-talk improved performance. [13]
  • Rethinking situations. People who habitually reappraise situations experience more positive emotion and greater wellbeing. [14] Let Them is a form of reframing what other people do.
