What people use it for

What the evidence says

Nobody knows. We searched the main research databases for the exact phrase and found no published trial, case series or review of NHR. All the evidence for it is testimonial.

Hypnosis in general has real evidence, in specific areas. The best support is for pain and medical procedures, but most reviews are of low quality (Rosendahl et al., 2024). None of it tests Bandler's method.

The "chemical" claims are untested. NHR is sold as changing experience "at the neurological and chemical level". We found no measurement of this.

NLP, its parent field, has a weak research record. Independent reviews found little support for its claims (Witkowski, 2010; Sturt et al., 2012).

You will find the full evidence, with sources, in the complete guide.

Before you start: NHR has no published evidence for depression, anxiety, trauma, OCD or addiction. For those, start with your doctor or a licensed mental health professional. Seminars are run by non-clinicians, and the NHR certificate is a private credential, not a licence to treat mental illness.

FAQs

Where should a complete beginner start?

Read our complete guide first. It explains Neuro-Hypnotic Repatterning step by step and says plainly what the evidence does and does not show.

Who created NHR?

Richard Bandler created it, building on NLP and his Design Human Engineering® work. John La Valle is the co-trainer and owns the US trademark. We could not confirm the first date it was taught, but a course review shows it was being taught by December 2006.

Is NHR the same as NLP?

No. NHR comes from NLP but is marketed as a separate, hypnosis-based process. Bandler says the difference "is not in the techniques but the outcome": NLP changes thinking and behaviour, while NHR focuses on feelings. NHR training is separate from NLP Practitioner certification, although some providers recommend or require NLP training first.

Does NHR work?

We don't know. We found no published study of NHR. Research supports hypnosis for some problems, such as pain, but not for NHR specifically, and reviews of NLP, its parent field, find little support. Evidence for NHR consists of testimonials from its trainers and clients, which cannot show cause and effect.

Is NHR safe?

For most healthy adults, hypnosis carries a low risk of mild effects such as dizziness. NHR itself hasn't been studied. The bigger risks are false memories, intense emotion in large groups, and using NHR instead of proven treatment. Take medical advice first if you have psychosis, bipolar disorder or trauma.

Can NHR cure depression, anxiety or addiction?

There is no evidence that it can. NHR hasn't been tested for any of these. For depression, anxiety or trauma, see a doctor or licensed therapist. Hypnotherapy for stopping smoking showed no reliable benefit over other methods in a Cochrane review, so be sceptical of any claim to cure addiction.

Is NHR regulated?

No. Hypnosis is regulated differently in each country: a few US states require registration, and the UK, Canada, Australia and India have no licence specific to hypnotherapists. NHR practitioners aren't regulated as NHR practitioners anywhere we checked. Look for a professional licence or register as well.
