Who is David R. Hawkins?

David Ramon Hawkins was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on 3 June 1927. After serving in the US Navy during the Second World War, he graduated from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1953. [1]

For the next 25 years he practised psychiatry in New York. As Medical Director of the North Nassau Mental Health Center (1956 to 1980) and Director of Research at Brunswick Hospital (1968 to 1979) on Long Island, he ran one of the largest psychiatric practices in the United States. In 1973 he co-authored Orthomolecular Psychiatry with the Nobel Prize-winning chemist Linus Pauling. [1]

In 1979 he moved to Sedona, Arizona, and in 1983 founded the Institute for Spiritual Research, a nonprofit dedicated to consciousness research. In 1995, at 68, he received a Ph.D., and that same year published Power vs. Force, which went on to be translated into 25 languages and sell over a million copies. [1]

More books followed, including The Eye of the I, Truth vs. Falsehood, Healing and Recovery and, shortly before his death, Letting Go: The Pathway of Surrender. From 1998 to 2011 he lectured widely, at venues including Westminster Abbey, the Oxford Forum and Harvard University. His final lecture, on love, drew 1,700 people in September 2011. He died at home in Sedona on 19 September 2012, aged 85. [1]

His teaching in brief

  1. Notice the feeling. Become aware of the emotion that is present right now.
  2. Let it be. Allow it, without resisting, judging or trying to change it.
  3. Let it run out. Stay with the energy of the feeling until it has spent itself.
  4. Repeat in daily life. Surrender can be done anywhere, again and again.

The teachings of David R. Hawkins

Hawkins wrote many books, but a few ideas run through them all. Tap a card to read more.

Letting Go: the mechanism of surrender

Over decades of clinical practice, Hawkins searched for the most effective ways to relieve human suffering. He found that an inner mechanism of surrender was of great practical benefit, and described it in Letting Go: The Pathway of Surrender. [2]

Students had long asked him for a practical technique to remove the inner blocks to happiness, love, joy, success and health. Letting Go was his answer: a way of releasing those blocks that can be done in the midst of everyday life, and that applies to health, creativity, money, relationships and spiritual growth alike. [2]

In everyday terms, the practice is simple: notice a feeling, allow it to be there without resisting or condemning it, and let its energy run its course until it fades. A few minutes a day is a good start. Our Sedona Method guide covers a related releasing technique, and our stress management guide has more tools.

The Map of Consciousness®

Hawkins’s best-known framework is his Map of Consciousness®, first presented in Power vs. Force. It arranges levels of human consciousness, each linked with well-known attitudes and emotions, on a logarithmic scale of 1 to 1,000. [3] Each level has its own emotional tone and view of life: at the level of fear, for example, God is seen as punitive, while at the level of love, God is seen as loving. [1]

The level of 200 is the turning point, the fulcrum between force and power: Hawkins described levels below it as detrimental to life for the individual and society, and those above it as constructive expressions of power. Even a small rise, he said, represents a significant step forward. [3]

The Map is copyrighted and trademarked, so for the full chart see his books or the official Veritas page. Our Map of Consciousness guide explains how people use it for personal growth.

Power vs. force

The title of his most famous book sums up a central idea. In Hawkins’s account, power is linked with love, truth and integrity, while force belongs to the levels below integrity, and he saw the difference between the two as one of his key discoveries. His publisher notes that this idea has influenced fields from business and education to psychology. [1]

Hawkins believed that inner change radiates outward. As he put it: “We change the world not by what we say or do but as a consequence of what we have become.” [1]

A practical way to use this idea is to ask, before a difficult conversation or decision: am I acting from fear and pressure, or from calm, kindness and honesty? Our conflict resolution guide pairs well with this question.

Kindness to everything and everyone

Later in life Hawkins founded the Path of Devotional Nonduality. Its teachings emphasise the core truths of the world’s great spiritual traditions: kindness and compassion to everything and everyone, including oneself, humility, forgiveness, reverence for all of life, and surrender to God. [1]

His official publisher describes his books as explaining each level of consciousness in language free of dogma and inspiring to people from all walks of life. [1]

A simple daily practice drawn from this: choose one moment each day to be deliberately kind, including to yourself. Our self-love practices guide offers more ideas, and meditation supports the quiet awareness he taught.

Study groups and lectures

Hawkins’s work continues through study groups around the world, where people meet to read and discuss his books together. Veritas Publishing offers guidance on joining or starting one. [4]

His publisher also keeps a large archive of his recorded lectures from 2002 to 2011, along with discussion series filmed in Sedona with his wife Susan on topics such as How to Live Your Life Like a Prayer and Permanent Inner Peace. [1]

What the Research Shows

Letting Go is a spiritual practice, and its heart, allowing feelings rather than fighting them, fits well with modern research on emotional acceptance.

  • Accepting feelings. Across laboratory, diary and longitudinal studies, people who habitually accepted their negative emotions and thoughts, rather than judging them, reported better psychological health. [5]
  • Allowing rather than suppressing. In an experiment with 60 people with anxiety and mood disorders, those asked to accept their emotions while watching an emotional film showed less negative emotion during the recovery period afterwards than those asked to suppress them. [6]

Both findings echo his simple instruction to let a feeling be until it runs out.
