Who is Abraham Hicks?

Esther Hicks, born Esther Weaver in Coalville, Utah, married Jerry Hicks in 1980. [2] Esther’s experiences with Abraham began in 1985, after the couple read the Seth Material of Jane Roberts. [2]

Abraham has described themselves as “a group consciousness from the non-physical dimension”. Esther calls Abraham “infinite intelligence”, while Jerry, ever practical, said he simply used the teachings “for the good it will do for myself and others”. [1]

They began giving readings in 1987 and conferences the following year, travelling from city to city in a motorhome, and later adding cruises to the road trips. [2] With Hay House they published a series of bestsellers, including Ask and It Is Given (2004), The Amazing Power of Deliberate Intent (2006), The Law of Attraction (2006), The Astonishing Power of Emotions (2008), Money and the Law of Attraction and The Vortex (2009). [2] Neale Donald Walsch, who wrote the foreword to The Law of Attraction, called it “everything you need to know about Life and how to make it work”. [3] Louise Hay called them “some of the best teachers on the planet today”. [1]

Jerry passed away in 2011, and Esther has continued the work. [2] Today she holds workshops in around 25 cities a year, plus cruises and international events, and hosts the Abraham NOW online broadcasts. [4] [5] Their first new book in over ten years, The Art of Allowing, is due out in December 2026. [6] Online broadcasts mean people in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Europe and India can join live from home.

Their teachings in brief

  2. Know the three laws. The Law of Attraction, Deliberate Creation and Allowing.
  3. Use the scale. Find where you are on the Emotional Guidance Scale and reach one step higher.
  4. Allow. Let go of resistance so what you want can flow to you.

The teachings of Abraham Hicks

Abraham’s message is simple at its core: you are meant to feel good, and your emotions show the way. Tap a card to read more.

The core message

The official synopsis of Abraham-Hicks’ teachings opens with a few simple ideas. [1]

  • You are a physical extension of that which is non-physical.
  • You are here in this body because you chose to be here.
  • The basis of your life is freedom; the purpose of your life is joy.

[1] Abraham also teaches that whenever you feel great love, joy or appreciation, you are feeling the energy of Source flowing through you. [1] The teachings invite you to test them for yourself: if they feel good, you are in the right place. [1]

The Law of Attraction

The first of three universal laws in Ask and It Is Given is the Law of Attraction: “The essence of that which is like unto itself, is drawn.” [7]

Abraham compares it to gravity. Just as gravity needs no practice and responds the same way to everything, the Law of Attraction responds consistently, bringing you things that match your vibration whether or not you know about it. [7]

In practice, this means paying attention to how you feel, since your feelings show the vibration you are offering. Our Law of Attraction guide explores the idea further.

The Law of Deliberate Creation

The second law is the Law of Deliberate Creation. As Ask and It Is Given puts it, by deliberately directing your attention and thoughts toward the outcome you desire, you can be, do or have anything you choose. [7]

Abraham also teaches that contrast, knowing what you do not want, helps you discover what you do want. Every life experience gives birth to new preferences. [7]

To try it, write down one thing you do not want, then turn it around into a clear statement of what you do want, and spend a few minutes each day focusing on how that will feel. Our visualisation guide offers more ways to focus.

The Art of Allowing

The third law, the Law of Allowing, is where Abraham says “all of your personal power lies”. [7] Allowing means releasing resistance, the thoughts and feelings that pinch you off from what you want, so that it can flow to you.

Allowing is also the heart of their new book, The Art of Allowing, the first in over a decade based on entirely new teachings. It offers an Emotional Guidance Scale and shows how the emotions you spend most time in shape your experience. [6]

The Emotional Guidance Scale

The Emotional Guidance Scale is one of Abraham’s best-known tools. It lists 22 emotions, from the fullest connection with Source Energy at the top to the most resistant at the bottom. [8]

  • Top: 1. Joy, knowledge, empowerment, freedom, love and appreciation; 2. Passion; 3. Enthusiasm, eagerness and happiness; 4. Positive expectation and belief; 5. Optimism; 6. Hopefulness; 7. Contentment.
  • Middle: 8. Boredom through to 16. Discouragement, including pessimism, frustration, overwhelm, disappointment, doubt, worry and blame.
  • Bottom: 17. Anger through to 22. Fear, grief, depression, despair and powerlessness.

[8] The idea is not to leap from the bottom to the top, but to find where you are and reach for a thought that feels a little better, one step at a time. Our Abraham-Hicks guide has more ways to use it.

What the Research Shows

Abraham’s teachings are spiritual rather than scientific, but positive psychology has explored some of the same ground.

  • Feeling good. Barbara Fredrickson’s broaden-and-build theory proposes that positive emotions widen our thinking and help build lasting personal resources over time. [9] This echoes Abraham’s focus on reaching for better-feeling thoughts.
  • Appreciation. In a set of studies, people who regularly noted things they were grateful for reported better wellbeing than comparison groups. [10] Appreciation sits at the very top of the Emotional Guidance Scale.
