Deepak Chopra is an Indian-born American physician, author and meditation teacher, best known for The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success. [1] He has written more than 90 books, and for over four decades his work has “offered a bridge between ancient wisdom and modern life.” [1]
Who is Deepak Chopra?
Deepak was born in New Delhi, India, and trained as a physician before becoming one of the best-known voices on meditation and personal transformation. [2] His work blends ideas from ancient wisdom traditions, especially India’s Vedic tradition, with modern life. [2]
He is the founder of the Chopra Foundation and the author of more than 90 books. The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success alone has sold over 20 million copies worldwide. [1] His other well-known titles include Ageless Body, Timeless Mind and, more recently, Awakening and Awakening in the Final Chapter, which he describes as a reflection on “what it means to live fully in the face of impermanence.” [3]
Today he teaches through books, online courses, 21-day meditation programs and a membership with guided meditations and live sessions. [4] His official website also offers DeepakChopra.ai, an AI guide built on his teachings. [4]
His style is gentle and conversational. In his short guided meditations he often asks people simply to notice, rest and “just be.” [5]
His approach in brief
- Return to silence. Observe without judging.
- Give what you want to receive. Keep life circulating.
- Pause before you act. Choose consciously.
- Set an intention, then let go. Release attachment to outcome.

These ideas come from his books, courses and guided meditations, explained in plain English. Tap a card to read more.
Pure potentiality
The first of Deepak’s seven spiritual laws is pure potentiality. His course describes it as a return to “awareness as your source.” [1]
The way in is simple: “Through silence, observation, and non-judgment, you reconnect with the creative intelligence that underlies everything.” [1]
His meditations come back to the same point. Resting quietly and being “aware of being aware,” he says, “is our ground state before a thought arises before a feeling it’s who we really are a field of infinite potential.” [5]
Giving and receiving
The second law is giving and receiving. “Life is circulation,” his course says. [1]
It invites you to explore “how attention, generosity, and receptivity restore flow — in your relationships, your work, and yourself.” [1]
Karma
Deepak’s third law is karma, or cause and effect. “Every choice shapes experience,” his course says. [1]
The practice is to “pause, observe, and consciously direct your actions rather than react from habit.” [1]
Least effort
The fourth law is least effort. “There’s a difference between force and alignment,” the course explains. [1]
The aim is to “reduce resistance and move through life with clarity instead of strain.” [1]
Intention and detachment
Laws five and six work as a pair. The fifth, intention and desire, says that “intention organizes experience.” You learn “how to plant clear intentions and release attachment to outcome — so life can meet you where you are.” [1]
The sixth law, detachment, follows on: “Freedom doesn’t come from control. It comes from remaining steady regardless of outcome.” [1]
His course sums up the journey through the laws as reconnecting “with awareness as your foundation, intention as your organizing force, and dharma as your expression in the world.” [1]
Dharma
The seventh law is dharma, or purpose. “You have a unique expression in the world,” his course says. [1]
The practice is to “identify your natural strengths and align them with service and meaning.” [1]
He presents the seven laws as a daily practice, one for each day of the week, so the ideas become part of ordinary life. His course describes them as “a practical map for navigating everyday life — uncertainty, decisions, relationships, purpose.” [1]
The I Am meditation
One of Deepak’s simplest practices can be done with your eyes open, using what he calls “soft eyes.” [5] You start by observing your breath without changing it. When your mind wanders, “bring it back to your breathing.” [5]
Then you mentally repeat your full name and let your current worries come to mind. Next you drop your last name and recall your childhood. Then you drop your first name and simply repeat “I am,” with “no labels attached.” [5] If you like, you can replace it with the sound “aham” or “om.” [5]
Finally, you let even that go and “rest in being rest in awareness.” He adds, “you can do this again and do it as often as you want and you can do it for longer.” [5]
Self-inquiry
Deepak also teaches self-inquiry, a practice from the Upanishads that he says was “made most popular, in the last century by the great sage, Ramana Maharshi.” [6] The point, he explains, is “not who am I as a mantra, but vigilant attention to the felt sense of what we call I.” [6]
To try it, “sit quietly, allow the body to be comfortable and relatively still, and let the breath be natural.” Notice “the simple sense I am before it becomes I’m this person in this story.” When a thought or feeling arises, don’t analyse it. “Ask to whom has this arisen?” then turn attention back to that bare sense of I. [6]
He suggests using it between sittings too. When you feel hurt, pride or fear, “pause and feel this contraction is happening to whom?” and rest there “until some spaciousness is felt.” [6]

What the Research Shows
Two practices close to Deepak’s teaching, stepping back to observe your own thoughts and giving thanks, have been studied.
- How you talk to yourself. Talking to yourself in the second or third person helped people stay calmer and perform better under stress. [7]
- Gratitude. People who regularly wrote down what they were grateful for reported higher wellbeing and more optimism than comparison groups. [8]
